Because sometimes hope isn’t found in the ending. Sometimes hope is found in believing that the story isn’t over yet.
About the Book
In There Is Always Hope, elementary school principal Rodney Fetty shares unforgettable true stories from classrooms, hallways, and everyday school life that reveal the extraordinary power of compassion, consistency, and human connection.
This is not a book about having all the answers. It is a book about seeing people differently. These stories will encourage you to look beyond behavior, recognize the unseen struggles others carry, and rediscover the quiet moments that have the power to change lives.
Filled with honesty, hope, and practical wisdom, There Is Always Hope reminds us that lasting change rarely comes through extraordinary events. More often, it is found in ordinary moments — one relationship, one conversation, and one act of compassion at a time.
If you have ever wondered whether the small things you do really matter, this book is your reminder that they do. Because the moments that seem smallest today often become the stories people carry for the rest of their lives.
The Story Behind There Is Always Hope
The book began with an article I wrote about trauma-informed leadership, published in Principal Navigator, the quarterly magazine of the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators (OAESA).
Trauma-informed leadership asks us to look beyond a child's behavior and consider the experiences, challenges, and unmet needs that may be influencing it. It reminds us that how we respond to children matters—and that relationships, understanding, and compassion can make a lasting difference.
Writing that article gave me an opportunity to reflect on the experiences, relationships, and moments that can shape a child's life. But the message felt too important to leave there.
I wanted to explore it more deeply through the stories and lessons that have stayed with me throughout my work in education. That idea grew into There Is Always Hope: Finding Hope in the Everyday Moments That Change Lives.
"A Must-Read for Anyone Who Works with Kids
This book is a powerful reminder that the little things we do every day can make a lasting difference in a child’s life. The stories are honest, emotional, and incredibly encouraging. I found myself thinking about my own students and the moments when a simple conversation, a little kindness, or just being there can mean so much."

A Few Lines from There Is Always Hope
Some words stay with us. These are a few of the truths at the heart of this book.
Children rarely remember our policies. They remember how we made them feel.
Hope asks us to look beyond behavior and remain curious long enough to discover the story beneath it.
Maybe that’s how hope survives.
One child. One educator.
One generation… at a time.
Every child carries a story. Every relationship can make a difference.
